40ft Container Dimensions & Details

The 40ft standard container offers roughly 2,350 cubic feet of interior space, twice that of the 20ft conex box, in the same 8-foot width. It is the workhorse container for construction companies, agricultural operations, and any business that moves or stores significant volumes of material. Weighing up whether to rent or buy this size? See our rent vs buy guide.

A 40ft needs a longer approach for delivery than a 20ft. Available in several grades, including used wind and water tight (WWT) and one-trip. Our container condition guide has the full grade breakdown.

Use Cases

Ways to Use a 40ft Container in Indiana

Stage larger renovation materials near an Indianapolis job while keeping the door end accessible to the crew each morning.

Give a Fort Wayne maintenance operation a long run of shelving for labeled bins, spare components and equipment that is not in daily use.

Organize dry farm implements and replacement parts in the north central counties.

Separate packaged overflow inventory from loading operations in an Evansville commercial yard, keeping the truck path outside the storage footprint.

Store seasonal grounds equipment for an Indiana property after cleaning and drying it, rather than trapping moisture with the stored items.

Delivering 40ft Containers Across Indiana

Site Requirements for 40ft Delivery

A 40ft container needs more room to deliver than a 20ft. The truck with a loaded tilt-bed trailer runs about 80 feet long. Here is what you need:

  • Approach length: 130 feet of clear, firm surface ahead of where the container will sit.
  • Width clearance: At least 10 feet throughout the delivery path.
  • Overhead clearance: At least 15 feet of height for the truck to drive in and 22 feet of height along the entire unloading path.
  • Firm ground: The landing area needs to carry the container's weight, roughly 8,000 lbs empty. Concrete, compacted gravel, and hard-packed dirt all work well.

FAQ

40ft Container Questions

A 40ft container needs 130 feet of straight, level run measured back from where it will sit, at least 15 feet of height for the truck to drive in and 22 feet of height along the entire unloading path, and at least 10 feet of width. Where a site cannot give a 40ft that run, two 20ft containers, which need 110 feet each, may fit.
Wind and Water Tight units start at $2,602 delivered in Indianapolis. What you pay depends on the grade you choose, on what is in stock when you order and on the access at your site. Container One sets prices, and they change without notice; your written quote gives the price for your order, including delivery to your address. Prices as of 2026-09-30.
Warranty runs by grade: one-trip units carry a 10 year structural and 10 year no-leak warranty, cargo worthy and wind and water tight units carry a 5 year structural and 5 year no-leak warranty, and economy units carry a 1 year roof leak warranty.
